Redevelopment of Zonohana District

Zonohana District

Looking out to sea from the Yamashita Rinkosen Promenade linking Aka-Renga Park and Yamashita Park in the Zonohana district, one can see the pier stretching leftwards from the base of the Yokohama International Passenger Terminal.

The pier's trunk-like appearance when viewed from above has led to its being popularly dubbed the "Zonohana," or elephant's trunk, in Japanese. As a symbolic project to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Yokohama in 2009, the Zonohana district, which is where the port originated, will be redeveloped to create a symbolic space that acts as a bridge between Yokohama's past and future. At the same time, creative functions will be clustered together to make the entire area around the Zonohana district into an international zone of culture, tourism, and interaction that is representative of Yokohama and a hub of the National Art Park Plan. Designers for redevelopment were selected by proposal.
