Newest Information on Library Services


During fiscal 1998, Yokohama City libraries loaned a total of approximately 10 million books (Japanese and foreign titles). Nishi Ward's Yokohama City Central Library (Yokohama-shi Chuo Toshokan) keeps l,030,000 titles, which is about one-third of the 3,000,000 titles in the entire city library system. The following information will bring you up to date on librarv services.

Libraries to open on holidays from April

Beginning in April. all city libraries will be open on holidays. Added to fewer special inventory days, Iibraries will be opened for 30 more days than last year.

The Yokohama City Central Library will extend its weekday hours by an hour and a half from April.

Since fall 1999, the libraries have auto-mated answering services (in Japanese) known as "Reserved Books Information Dial (Yoyaku Tosho Joho Dial) (Tel. 045-262-0040) that allow users to check on the status of books they've reserved at the library, seven days a week and 24 hours a day. (Visitors can check on the status of a book they've reserved at the library counter.)

The counter will also help library users locate materials.

you must register to borrow books at yokohama libraries. During registration, you must provide identification (your health certificate, driver's license, passport, etc.) to verify you live, attend school or work in Yokohama.

Personal computer corner at Yokohama City Central Library

Research methods continue to diversify. To find the information you need you can look through books and other materials, search the Internet, browse CD-ROMS and more. The city believe libraries play an important role in providing access to these information sources. As part of the city's ongoing effort in this field, the Yokohama City Central Library created a "Personal Computer Comer" (in Japanese) in October 1999. Visitors are welcome to take advantage of the encyclopedias, etc., available in its collection of about 5O different CD-ROMS and the corner's newspaper data-base.

*Closed Mondays and between Dec. 29 and Jan. 3. If Monday falls on a holiday, the library will be closed the following day. The library is closed for special inventory days.
